Captain Smit Machchhar: A Pilot’s Journey, Courage and Commitment

For Captain Smit Machchhar, becoming a pilot was not something he had planned from childhood. His journey to the cockpit began rather unexpectedly, when he was studying textile engineering and later pursuing management studies in Mumbai. An aviation seminar changed his direction. At around 19, he became interested in flying and decided to follow a path that was unfamiliar to him and, initially, worrying for his family. He eventually travelled to New Zealand for commercial pilot training, taking the first major step towards a career that would later put him in the spotlight.

Machchhar went on to build a long career in commercial aviation. He joined SpiceJet in 2011 and spent more than a decade with the airline, rising to become a commander and Line Training Captain. His role was not only about flying aircraft but also about guiding and training other pilots. In 2022, he joined flydubai as a captain and continued flying Boeing 737 aircraft. Reports say he has accumulated nearly 9,750 hours of flying experience, reflecting years of training, discipline and countless hours in the cockpit.

But it was an extraordinary incident on September 30, 2026, that brought his name to international attention. During flydubai Flight FZ1073, travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 people on board, Machchhar was attacked by his co-pilot inside the cockpit. Despite being seriously injured, he managed to respond during a rapidly developing emergency and helped create an opportunity for other crew members and passengers to intervene. The aircraft was eventually diverted and landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

What stands out in the accounts of the incident is not only the danger itself, but Machchhar’s ability to keep thinking while under immense pressure. Reports say that even after suffering injuries, he managed to open the cockpit door, allowing others to enter and help bring the situation under control. His training, experience and instinct for responsibility became crucial at a moment when there was little time to think.

Away from the dramatic headlines, colleagues and friends have described Machchhar as calm, humble and approachable. His career also shows that becoming a good pilot is not simply about controlling an aircraft. It is about preparation, patience, teamwork and knowing that hundreds of lives may depend on a decision made in just a few seconds.

Captain Smit Machchhar’s story, therefore, is more than an account of one frightening flight. It is a story of an unexpected career choice, years of hard work and, when the most difficult moment arrived, the courage to put duty first. Sometimes, a person’s character is revealed not during ordinary days, but in those rare moments when everything goes wrong. For Machchhar, that moment came thousands of feet above the ground — and his response has now become an important chapter in his remarkable journey.
