ASSAM, Dima Hasao: The 4th Mithun Day, themed “Celebrating the Pride of the Hills,” was observed on 3rd September, 2026 with enthusiasm at the District Library Auditorium, Haflong, Dima Hasao, highlighting the cultural, ecological and economic significance of Mithun and its potential to contribute to sustainable livelihoods in the hill district.

The celebration featured a Seminar on “Integrated Mithun Farming in Dima Hasao” and a Roundtable Meeting on “Development of the Mithun Sector in the North Eastern Region (NER)”. The deliberations brought together policymakers, scientists, officials, farmers and other stakeholders to discuss sustainable Mithun production, scientific management, conservation, value addition and livelihood enhancement.

Addressing the gathering, Smt. Nilima Devi highlighted the unique status of Mithun in Assam, describing it as a rare treasure found only in Dima Hasao in the state. She emphasized that Mithun represents much more than a livestock species, as it strengthens local identity, enriches biodiversity and remains deeply connected with the traditions and cultural heritage of the hill communities.

An exhibition showcasing technologies and innovations suitable for the agro-ecological conditions of Dima Hasao was also organized as part of the celebration. Various line departments, along with Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Dima Hasao, participated in the exhibition and displayed a range of technologies, farm-based interventions, improved agricultural practices, livestock and fisheries technologies, value-added products and livelihood-oriented innovations relevant to the local farming communities.

KVK, Dima Hasao showcased various location-specific technologies and interventions aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity, promoting integrated farming systems, improving livestock and fisheries-based livelihoods, encouraging natural and sustainable farming practices, and supporting income generation among farmers of the district. The exhibition provided an effective platform for farmers, visitors and dignitaries to interact with experts and gain firsthand knowledge about technologies that can be adopted under the local conditions.

The 4th Mithun Day thus served as a significant platform to celebrate Mithun as the “Pride of the Hills” while creating awareness about scientific technologies and sustainable livelihood opportunities suited to the unique agro-ecological conditions of Dima Hasao.
